Psychotherapy in a multicultural world.
Psychotherapy care at AMPS follows a unique protocol, with a big focus on our understanding of the impact of our multicultural society on mental health. We understand that we live in a multicultural society and people hold different beliefs, values, and orientations depending on their cultural settings, religious affiliations, race, gender, socioeconomic status, and educational background. At AMPS, we pride ourselves on recognizing that individuals are unique. Therefore, what works on me MAY NOT work on you hence pioneering a more person-to-person-centered approach focusing on the client’s needs and strengths as opposed to collective therapy.
Meet Ms Mayimuna Kiyingi Nakayiira (Mayi)
Ask_My Psychotherapy Services (AMPS) was founded by Ms Mayimuna Kiyingi Nakayiira (Mayi).
Mayi has had a rich share of experiencing personal pain and loss second hand closely to someone she loved and cared for dearly from her teenage (19 years) up until her early thirties.
She forged her identity and navigated growth while drawing possible interventions and skills to nurse a broken heart, wounded soul, and a negatively decorated mind that viewed the environment as malicious, and dangerous.
Mayi has gone through bereavement and struggled with grief which has widened her scope of understanding and relating with her clients in both personal and professional spheres, especially in grief therapy and emotional vulnerability coping.
At AMPS, the respect, and service care we offer our clients is the same for everyone. But each individual’s experience is therapeutically navigated according to their unique experiences, cultures, goals, beliefs, values, and needs.
Therefore, for a culturally respectful, sensitive, and non-judgemental space with a wide spectrum of care and support, do not hesitate to get in touch with us while you navigate the journey of uncertainties.

Psychotherapies in Use
Solution-Focussed Therapy
The center of focus is the real problem itself and the solutions the clients come up with to solve the problem. Then, we support and empower them on how to implement the solutions to reach their goals.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A type of psychotherapy that involves the art of interrogating and challenging the unhealthy and negative ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving hence improving the individual’s quality of life. We engage our clients in much more self-help practical strategies altered to the individual’s targeted goals for improved quality of life.
Strength-Based Therapy
This type of therapy highlights the individual’s internal strength and resources while putting less concentration on weaknesses and failures. It boosts the clients’ positive attitude to enhancing their best qualities and a positive mindset of self and one’s environment hence working more on the internal self that feeds the external. Rather than waiting to derive resources from the external to feed the internal which is a dangerous approach.
Psychoanalysis
This is a type of psychotherapy whose assumptions are embedded in the history of the individual’s early childhood experiences. It interrogates the unconscious mind and tries to understand how the presenting emotional problems and their relationship with psychological disorders are a result of the traumas of the past. The relationship between a child and the primary caregiver determines their attachment styles as grown-ups, personality formations, and all other interpersonal future relationships and how they relate within their environment.
E.g., A person who enjoys their company, and is introverted may have formed this type of personality as a result of not being needy for love and care stemming from a strict parenting background from absent, busy, and strict parents. (Yes, they provide everything but they are not present for the child’s emotional, and psychological needs hence they form an introversion personality trait as a defense mechanism).
Spiritual/Existential Therapy
This form of therapy focuses on the body-mind and, spirit component focusing on the meaning behind your situation leading you to a spiritually informed highlight of events and resources personal development, and all-round growth. In this type of psychotherapy, incorporating forgiveness, scripture, and Qur’anic verses are used as points of reference while non-denominational therapists use yoga, meditation, and other ways of connecting to nature.
Religion as a form of deeper spiritual grounding for those challenged and traumatized boosts strength both internal and external aiding support for a quick recovery process.
Expressive Therapy/Creative Theories
This is the form of therapy that is simply explained by its name. We engage in music, art, poetry/creative writing, storytelling, dance/movement, pottery, and other forms of creativity to support the clients in recovery. We give a client the audience to choose three kinds that resonate more with them from which we choose the best two to concentrate on grounding them in counselling /psychotherapy practices, health care, and rehabilitation. Very good for exploring emotional problems, depressive mood disorders, anxiety, and other mental-related conditions.
Schema Therapy
Very useful therapy for personality disorders; Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD); eating disorders; criminal behaviours; anxiety; substance abuse; relationship issues; and, chronic depression. It integrates techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic perspectives, attachment theories, and gestalt therapy. It goes beyond CBT and integrates the past (Psychodynamic) to guide understanding and become aware of the present.
We work on eliminating maladaptive schemas, and historical unproductive ways of coping with problems in the individual’s past.
Behavioural Therapy
Derives its logical fundamentals from a saying that, “all behaviors are learned and can be unlearned”. This theory is grounded in helping an individual to understand how their thoughts and beliefs influence their behavioral patterns.
This therapy identifies and maps out all destructive and unhealthy behaviors and collaboratively the therapist supports the client in coming up with more suitable and productive behaviours to replace the old unhealthy ones
Narrative Therapy
This type of psychotherapy deals with challenging maladaptive thoughts/strongly held beliefs of oneself as a result of hearing other people’s stories informing of their personality hence believing it is the reality of who they are. For instance; someone talking about you as being a bad husband and you hold the narrative to be the reality of your character.
Group Therapy
This therapy involves one therapist or more working with several people (6 to 10, or 12) at the same time. Group therapies are very useful, especially for those who have been stigmatized to associate with those with similar problems for emotional and social support. It is common in; addictions, physical health-related issues, and other related mental conditions.
